Tech Talks

Sarra Laksaci: Information Retrieval Systems - Data mining for search engines

Data mining is the concept of extracting valuable information from massive data of different forms. One main source of natural language text data is the web where billions of articles, reviews and tweets are available. In this sea of information that is the web, Information Retrieval Systems are the key to extracting the most relevant documents based on a user’s search query.

This talk will give an overview of some Information Retrieval methods, which play an important role in your daily interactions with search engines, by discovering how they work and how they can be evaluated.

Azize Ergün: I don’t think I’m cut out for this: Imposter syndrome

Do you ever feel unqualified? In any sector, especially one as fast-paced as technology, it's fairly natural to have doubts about oneself and feel like a fraud.

In this talk, Azize will explain this phenomenon and help you realise that everyone experiences this. Advice on how to manage and conquer your thoughts so that you may achieve things and stop sabotaging your own successes so that you can overcome any obstacles you may have set up for yourself.

Mariia P: Eyes don't lie: Predicting drowsiness from eye-movements

This talk will revolve around the problem of automated drowsiness detection. We will discuss its main challenges and introduce eye-tracking as a method to solve this task. Relying on conclusions of her recent research project, Maria will show what kind of eye-movements are most reliable for drowsiness detection, and we will learn if data from eye-tracking experiments paired with machine learning are a good team to recognize sleepy eyes.

Dr. Sarah Klein: Industrial stock videos or: how stock videos boost gender stereotypes

When it comes to outreach or cooperate material, stock photos or stock videos are widely used. Usually, the platforms offer a simple keyword search for finding what you need. When using them for a video tutorial myself, she came across a strong bias in the tagging. In this short presentation, Sarah will show how I analysed these tags more systematically and how they boost gender bias.
